Your hardscape decides where you'll gather, how you'll move through the yard and how the whole space holds up over the years. It's the foundation of everything else.

What you see is the surface. What protects your investment is underneath. Our standard is excavation to the right depth, a base compacted in layers and drainage planned before the first stone is set, because East Bay clay soil punishes shortcuts.

Explore Options

Compare and choose.

Choosing a surface is the biggest hardscape decision. Each option has a different look, feel and lifespan:

Design and Style

Shaped to suit your home.

Hardscape sets the tone of the whole yard. Large-format porcelain and smooth concrete read modern. Tumbled pavers and natural flagstone read classic and warm. We help you choose by looking at your home's architecture first.

Materials and Options

Selected for how you live, and how long it lasts.

  • Concrete and porcelain pavers
  • Poured and finished concrete
  • Flagstone and natural stone
  • Walkways, steps and landings
  • Seat walls and borders
  • Drainage planned into the base
Planning Your Project

What to know before you build.

Decisions to make

  • How the space will be used: dining, lounging, cooking, play
  • The surface that suits your style and your soil
  • How water leaves the patio
  • Where lighting and gas lines will run, before the base goes in
JAC RecommendsRun conduit for future lighting and gas under the patio now, even if you are not adding those features yet. It costs little during the build and saves tearing up a finished surface later.
Questions

What homeowners ask us.

Which surface is right for my home?

It depends on the look you want, how the space will be used and your investment range. We walk you through the options and show samples before anything is ordered.

Can you work with an existing patio?

Sometimes. We assess the existing base and condition on site and give you an honest recommendation.

Do you plan for drainage?

Yes. Grading and drainage are part of every hardscape plan.
