Schedule a Discovery ConsultationClayton sits at the foot of Mount Diablo, small enough to feel like a village and close enough to the mountain that open space is part of daily life. We design and build outdoor living spaces for Clayton homeowners who want their backyard to match that setting.

Clayton is home to about 11,000 people and has held on to its small-town feel. The town center is where neighbors run into each other on a weekend morning, and the slopes of Mount Diablo rise just south of town. Here, a backyard is often the best seat for watching the light change on the mountain.
Clayton was laid out in 1857 by Joel Henry Clayton and his brothers, with Charles Rhine as a cofounder. The town's name was settled by a coin flip between Clayton and Rhine. It grew with the coal mining boom in eastern Contra Costa County, and its post office opened in 1861.
Clayton incorporated in 1964, partly to head off an annexation attempt by Concord, and more than doubled its land area in 1987 with annexations including Dana Hills and Clayton Wood.
Answer five quick questions and see the features and projects built for the way you live.
Clayton runs hot and dry in summer, with a record high of 115°F. Homes on the edge of open space also live with real wildfire history: the 2013 Morgan Fire on Mount Diablo burned about 3,100 acres, and a 2018 vegetation fire on Marsh Creek Road destroyed a home. Many Clayton properties may fall within state-mapped fire hazard severity zones, which can bring added requirements for materials, plant spacing and structures. We check the current maps and confirm the permit path with the City of Clayton during planning.
Black-tailed deer are common around Mount Diablo, so we plan planting with them in mind.
Every project begins with a discovery consultation. We learn about your home, your goals and how you want to live outside, then recommend the right next step.

We favor plants deer tend to leave alone, protect the ones they do not, and use layout and fencing to keep the most valuable planting closer to the house.
