Many older Pleasant Hill backyards follow a familiar pattern: a patch of lawn, a small slab patio and a fence. Those yards have far more potential than most people expect.

We design and build outdoor living spaces for Pleasant Hill homeowners who are ready to turn that standard layout into a yard they use every day.

Why Pleasant Hill works so well outdoors

Pleasant Hill sits in the middle of the Diablo Valley with a comfortable climate: summer highs in the 70s to upper 80s, and winters when fog is common. It is a city of parks, run by its own Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District, with places like Pleasant Hill Park, Dinosaur Hill Park and the Rodgers Ranch Heritage Center.

Downtown Pleasant Hill, designed to feel like a small Main Street, opened in 2000. The Soldiers Memorial, erected in 1927 to honor the county's World War I veterans, still gives Monument Boulevard its name.

Local Conditions

Built for the land you live on.

Pleasant Hill's climate is milder than the far east end of the valley, but summer afternoons still get warm, so we plan shade and irrigation by exposure. Structures, gas lines and electrical work typically need permits through the City of Pleasant Hill, and we confirm requirements during planning. Older homes can also have aging drain or utility lines, which we look for before final design.

Mid-Century Lots

A standard lot can still feel custom.

Gregory Gardens, one of the city's best-known neighborhoods, was developed in 1950, and many homes from that era sit on relatively flat, rectangular lots. Flat is an advantage. It gives us room to create distinct zones: a dining patio, a lounge around a fire pit, a strip of sod or artificial turf for kids, and planting that softens the fence line.

Structure does the rest. A pergola, a run of seat walls and thoughtful landscape lighting can make a typical lot feel like a private retreat.

Questions

What local homeowners ask us.

Can a small Pleasant Hill backyard fit an outdoor kitchen?

Usually, yes. A compact kitchen run along a fence or the house, paired with a dining area, fits on many standard lots when it is planned as part of the whole yard.

Should we choose sod or artificial turf?

Sod feels cooler and more natural; turf saves water and holds up to heavy play. We look at how you use the space, how much sun it gets and your maintenance preferences before recommending one.

Do you remove the old patio and lawn?

Yes. Demolition and haul-away of existing concrete, lawn and planting are part of the build.

How do we get started?

Book a Discovery Consultation. We will walk the yard with you, talk through how you want to use it and explain how design and planning work from there.
